City Sight Seeing Cape Town

Sometimes I get so caught up in the mundane day-to-day existence that I forget what an amazing city I live in.
These moments call for a bit of appreciation and education time. And sometimes there is nothing more fun than playing tourist in your home town.
Cue: the peninsula bus tour! If you have ever been to Cape Town you would have noticed the bright red hop-on-hop-off tour buses with people spilling over the top flashing camera's in every which way. In winter it's still a fun thing to do provided you dress duper warmly and wear a hoodie/beany, beacause the wind chill factor is FREEZING!
It was super fun though: we started at the V&A waterfront, went around town down past Newlands forests, Kirstenbosch gardens, through to Hout Bay (where we stopped for the real fish&chip experience at the Mariner's Wharf - an institution in it's own right), along llandudno, Camps Bay, Sea Point and back to the V&A.
Here are some pics form the trip :-)

Hot stuff

If you're looking for a fabulous dinner hot-spot (with fireplaces that is) then head to one of these venues for amazing food, great atmosphere and of course a warm welcoming...

(pics from top to bottom: Silvertree, Ricks Cafe, La Mouette, La Mouetter2)

La Mouette

Sea Point
Go For Fine dining, courtesy of London chef Henry Vigar. French cuisine with Mediterranean influences, plus top SA wines.
The Place A grand Tudor-style house (former home of the mayor in the 70s) with beautiful wooden finishes, large couches, a grand staircase (to put you to the sober test) and sweet little bar if you choose to spend the whole night drinking, not eating.
Best Seat There are fireplaces in every room (a bar area, three dining areas and a private dining room for larger parties).
On the Menu Choose the bouillabaisse or duck, and the signature ‘gin and tonic’ dessert.
021-433-0856

Rick’s Café Americain Gardens
Go For The vibe – it’s very popular for drinking, socialising and dining (despite the name of the place, the menu is North and South African).
The Place A grand café divided into an upstairs bar (one fireplace) and downstairs dining room (two fireplaces). It's informal, comfy and cosy – a great place for lovebirds to head for dinner.
Best Seat: The table on the ground floor right in front of the flames (booking essential).
On the Menu Try the springbok wrapped in bacon or the lamb shank.

Silver Tree Restaurant Kirstenbosch

Go For Music with your meal. Intimate, acoustic concerts from July to September, featuring Karen Zoid, Boulevard Blues, Cassette and others (www.sanbi.org)
The Place It's a single large room styled catering stage performances and can get a bot crowded. The long bar is very pleasant and views of the Kirstenbosch gardens can be seen form the windows.
Best Seat There’s one large fireplace at the opposite end to the stage. To best enjoy the show and warmth, sit in the middle.
On the Menu Yummy soups and the Strelitzia Stack (a tower of chicken breast, roast peppers, avo and blue cheese)

Feel it... it is here (and we're not talking about what the prostitue said t the blind man)

Friday (June 11) was an amazing night to be in the Mother City… the streets were packed with people, bars overflowing and vuvu’s blowing.

It was a sight to be seen! Check out images of long street, the fan park and greenpoint.

Bloemendal Wine Estate winter events

Bloemendal (a 300 year old wine farm) has a busy line-up of great foods, wines and entertainment over the next few weeks.
But don’t worry – it all caters around the soccer.
On Saturday night (June 12) I went for the Shiraz, shanks and The Stremes evening. The restaurant is an L-shape with two big screens on each end (for the soccer). The stage is set up in the joining part of the ‘L’ and the band plays a set before the soccer and after the soccer.
The shiraz (2002) was delicious and the lamb shank was to-die-for. It’s easy over stuff oneself at this gourmet buffet (R120 pp).
It also has two large fireplaces and on a winter night nothing can be better than sipping shiraz near the warm flames.
The next events on the cards are: Brazilian Cuisine & Diamondback Band (15 June); SA Potjiekos & Dane Taylor Trio (16 June); English Cuisine & Bloemendal Blues Band (18 June); African Cuisine & Natasha Meister and the Lonesharks (19 June); Swiss Cuisine & Cannon Band (25 June).

wacky wine weekend 2010

Being a Cape Townian we have the luxury of having hundreds of incredible wine farms all within 2 hours drive from the city centre.

The Robertson wine valley, which was also the first official wine route in SA recently held their popular Wacky Wine Weekend.

Do yourself a favour: if you missed the event this year or this is your first time hearing about it now – don’t miss it next year! It’s held annually in June, and not only do guests have a chance to taste a vast amount of wines, but there is loads of entertainment for the whole family. You will really be spoilt for choice and won’t be able to get through every farm, so download the programme before hand and plan your routes.

This year I visited all the main farms around the centre of Robertson and spent Friday night partying at Rietvallei (great comedy and live music). Saturday was spent exploring the tiny town of McGregor – what a treat!! Stop in and do a juice and olive tasting at Rhebokskraal. It’s great for non-alcoholic drinkers or people with serious hangovers.

Their wooded shiraz grape juice was AmaZing

Also instead of sticking to mainstream places like Graham Beck (which is lovely, but crazy busy with people) head out to the boutique wineries... there will be less crowds, more one-on-one tastings and tours and you can sit back and admire the view without being elbowed out the way by drunken 19-year-old Stellenbosch students.

Look out for the next festival the Robertson wine region does called the ROBERTSON SLOW - ENJOYING LIFE… SLOWLY Festival (6-9 August) (023) 626 3167 www.robertsonslow.com

It's not quite the same vibe as the Wacky wine, but it promises to be a fun, tasty winter weekend...

Refill anyone?
