We attended the bierfest this past weekend and it was super fun, super loud and filled with pretty frauleins, lederhosen and of course, BEER.
The oompah band were a bit too loud indoors, so we stuck outside for the majority of the afternoon. We had a table under an umbrella which made it really worth while.
I also bumped into some varsity mates who I had seen in years, so that was a real highlight :-)

‘South Africans love beer. Many have been to the Munich Oktoberfest and those who haven’t wish they had! We thought that an event modelled on the world-renowned 200-year-old Bavarian beer festival would do well locally,’ says event producer Andrew Douglas of TEG. The [next] SAB Oktober Bierfest takes place on the 27th to 29th at Montecasino’s Outdoor Event Area, which will be decorated like an authentic Bavarian bier hall complete with benches, fräuleins armed with mugs of frothy beer, live oompah bands and traditional games. Approximately 30 000 litres of beer will be produced for the fest, in the form of three Bavarian-style beers crafted by the brewmasters at SAB. ‘You won’t see them anywhere else in the country. They are exactly what you’d find in any bier hall at Munich Oktoberfest,’ Douglas says. These are a dark Munich Dunkel, a Krystal Weiss wheat beer with hints of clove, and the ‘crowd-pleasing’, easy-drinking Oktoberfest Bier. He adds that the food has been sourced from the finest purveyors of German food in SA – platters of cold meats, giant pretzels, eisbein, schnitzel, sauerkraut and world-famous sausages. SAB is partnering with Unicab, Sacab and Springbok Atlas to provide safe transport for the bierleichen (beer corpses, as drunk patrons are called in Bavaria), and Southern Sun has special B&B packages at hotels nearby. oktoberbierfest.co.za
