Exclusive Brandy Cocktail menu at the new Mano A Mano

South Africa is (to some people) synonymous with brandy (particularly brandy and coke)… But the launch of our very own brandy route and SA brandy app, there is a real move out there to try educate brandy drinkers on different ways to enjoy the potent stuff.

I popped in to a new restaurant the other day called Mano A Mano, just off Kloof Street on Park Road near the Fat Cactus. It's a cute breakfast/lunchtime kind of spot with cafe-style dishes such as pastas, salads and sandwiches.
Apple Breeze

The cool factor: They have a unique brandy cocktail list.
With a selection of 8 cocktails, tailor-made to suit different tastes, many of them are paired up with specific dishes, such as:

-The ‘Apple Breeze’ (Fish Eagle brandy, cloudy apple juice and cranberry juice) can be savoured with a light pasta
-The ‘Ama-lekkerlicious’ (KWV, cranberry juice and peach syrup) can be enjoyed with a crisp fresh salad.
- And the FHM Brandy Cocktail of the Year winner, the ‘Fynbos’ (Collisons chilled in a martini glass and shaken with rooibos tea and ginger liqueur) is the perfect companion for a Mano A Mano chicken prego roll.

The Ama-lekkerlicious was my favourite!

Be sure to pop in for a visit :-)

Lucerne's weekly open-air food market

Recently when I was in Lucerne, we managed to catch the weekly Saturday open-air market along the river Reuss.

I found the range of ingredients and quality of produce really inspiring. I couldn't resist trying the local Swiss cheeses, fresh seasonal fruits and deli items.

Fresh fruit and salad goods

There was such a variety of vegetables and salad making ingredients

olives and stuffed pepperdews

The olives were fantastic... I took some with me to snack on for our journey to Paris

Fresh Raviloi

They have an amazing selection of meats and sausages

The cheeses were delicious and rich

All the fruits and vegetables provide such a burst of colour
Make sure you have enough Franks with you as they don't really have card machines

Best of all, the atmosphere, friendliness of the people and location just made the market such a treat to wonder around and indulge. Just make sure you have enough Franks with you...
The market is open from quite early on, at least 7am until lunchtime.

Cape Town Beer Festival 2012 - a story through pictures

So this year's beer festival was amazing! I went on Friday and Saturday night and had an absolute blast both evenings, however random they were...
Here is my take on the this year's CTFestofBeer - told through a bunch of photographs :-)

We arrived Friday evening and the first port of call was to get some dinner to line our stomachs for the drinking marathon ahead... The Taj stand provided the most delicious butter chicken curry

San Julian Mexican restaurant had great tacos on offer (plus tequila)

We enjoyed the tacos so much, we had them at 6:30pm and again at 11pm...

And here the festivities begin!!
step 1: sip beer

'hmmmm delicious'

step 2: eat dinner

step 3: find your drinking buddies
Stellenbrau had 2 great beers on offer: the Alumni Ale and the Craven Craft Lager

Gallows Hill Brewing co had an amazing American Brown Ale

I loved Saggy Stone's Big Red Ale and the Desert Lager

I can't remember what we tried form these guys... I think the weiss - but whatever it was, it was pretty delicious

I did a full on tasting of the Brew Dog products, and walked away with a stick-on tattoo and slightly less dignity
Making more friends

Stealing beer (not really...)

Tim - double parking

Darling Brew's latest offering: Silver Back
Tim found his own eponymous beer stand

The Bone Crusher is still one of my most favourite beers

Triggerfish offer some great beers, such as the Hammer Head and Empowered Stout

Terrence (Siris Vintners) - the wine guy who often gets us into trouble....

The Serious Siris Stand
Beer Fest Take 2: Saturday - it was so cold, that after trying some beer, we had to drink red wine just to keep us warm - of course the aforementioned Terrence had no problem with this...

and more wine....

and more drinking friends.... (I think I am double parking wine and beer in this pic)

The truth is, we had stumbled into a bachelor party... with 'Bach-man' on the far right creating much of the entertainment

and more wine... by this stage we were getting out of hand...

and by this stage Beer Festival was over and we ended up at Slut and legless, I mean *cough*, Slug and Lettuce... all in all a great weekend :-)

Cape Town Festival of Beer starts tonight!

Today marks the start of the now annual Cape Town Festival of Beer!! Can I hear a 'woooooo-hooooo!!!!'
I'll be going tonight and tomorrow night, because, after all, there are way too many beers to try in one day (although we'll try really hard to taste as many as we can).
There will also be some wine available for your girlfriends (and lady-like friends) who don't drink beer. I however am more than keen to get stuck into some REAL craft beer.

Here are the deets:
23-25 November at Hamilton's Rugby Club in Green Point
Plenty of craft beer from all around the country – expect brands such as: Triggerfish, Camelthorn, DarlingBrewery, Jack Black, Napier, Gallows Hill, Robson's Shongweni Brewery, Royal Mzansi, plus tons more including some newbies! (150 different beers in total)
There will be food stalls to line those beer bellies...
Plus: they'll be screening the rugby on Saturday

Doors open:
Operating times:
Fri & Sat 12pm - 11pm (1 hour cool down from 10pm)
Sun 10am - 8pm (1 hour cool down from 7pm)
Tickets:
R100 per day
