The Pool Room at Oak Valley Wine Estate, Elgin

Our last stop on our Elgin Valley weekend was Oak Valley Wine Estate for a very late lunch at The Pool Room restaurant.

I knew Oak Valley's Shiraz and heard about the new restaurant, but it way surpassed what we expected from it. The food was superb, excellent and the mushroom risotto was one of the best I've ever had. Right up there with Societi Bistro. I'd go back just for the risotto.

My friend Seth did a wine and canape pairing experience – R125 for 6 wines and 6 small foods:
Sauvignon Blanc 2011 with roast aubergine & goats cheese en-croute with fresh tomato
Sauvignon blanc/semillon 2008 with spicy thai fish cake
Chardonnay 2012 with dill cured gravadlax with cream cheese & lemon zest
Pinot noir 2011 with  oak valley jamon
Shiraz 2011 with with oak valley pork belly with agri dolce sauce
Merlot/cabernet 2007  with chicken liver parfait on rye

We also tried some bone marrow for starters, which arrived in the bone, fresh out of the grill.
The chef prides himself in using local produce where possible, telling me how some of the mushrooms in the risotto were found in the area. Not only are his flavourful, but beautifully presented...

The deli has a selection of home-baked artisan breads and charcuterie from free range acorn-fed pork and grass-fed beef.

The wine-tasting station is next to the deli, within the same area as the restaurant, which overlooks a stunning pool and the wine valley beyond.
